Jack Lin (standing, in pink shirt), a 27-year-old financial engineering student from Taiwan studying at New York University. “To see is to believe. Cuba is a mystery for us, so we were very curious as to what people look like, how everything works. We stayed at this kind of homestay, ate what they eat and used what they use. For them, beef is a luxury food. It’s very different from any country I’d been to. Especially the cars. One night there was a thundershower, so we just grabbed a car and got in and there were no windows. And I thought, wow, a car with no windows, it’s very funny. My friend said he would never think this kind of car would be driving on the road. I loved the coastlines, like the Malecón. Lots of people were on the embankments, just lying there for the sunset. They have nothing to lose, they have nothing to win, they just are lying there to enjoy the breeze and laughing. I recommend people go to Cuba if they are trying to see different lifestyles, or even different cars. But if you are trying to see a fancy city or fancy buildings, then maybe save your money. Go to Vegas.”

The fish just come up and start nibbling your feet, and then eventually you get a pretty big swarm of them biting in between your toes and on the dead skin. We had an underwater camera so we were sticking it in there and getting photos of our feet with the fish. I guess it lasts maybe 10 or 15 minutes, and then they get a little bit bored of you and finish nibbling. The next day it felt like you’d had a pedicure — or that someone had given your feet a bit of a scrub. There were definitely a few bigger fish that everyone was worried about when they came swimming toward us: you could really feel them biting more than the others.
